SLiM is an acronym for Simple Login Manager. SLiM is lightweight and easy to configure, and requires minimal dependencies - none of the GNOME or KDE desktop environments or their corresponding toolkits. It thus contributes to a lightweight system for users who also like to use lightweight desktops such as IceWM, Xfce, Openbox, or Fluxbox.
The original project has not been maintained since 2013. This project was forked from the last release, V1.3.6, incorporating fixes to bring it up to date with developments in Linux. Initially I have concentrated on just making it work right, but in some cases that means I've added what some might consider features. If so, I try to make the enhancements configurable so as not to upset users who like the minimalism of what was there before.
Features
- PNG and XFT support for alpha transparency and anti-aliased fonts
- Support of external themes
- Configurable runtime options: X server, login / shutdown / reboot commands
- Single (GDM-like) or double (XDM-like) input control
- Can load predefined users on startup
- Configurable welcome / shutdown messages
- Random theme selection
slimlock
Shortly before the original project died, the then maintainer incorporated a spin-off screen locking tool called "slimlock". I'm not sure whether anyone actually uses that ‐ it has a number of quirks that I would consider bugs. I don't consider it a high priority, being very much an after-thought and not the main application. However, I do plan to fix it and make it usable, especially where doing so allows me to remove cruft from the SLiM code.
